In 1961, Laboratory of X-ray and Spectral study was established aiming to conduct research on solid state physics on the initiative of professor D.Batsuuri, member of Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The laboratory became the basis of current Department of Materials Science and Nanotechnology.
The department conducts research on synthesis of nano-sized materials and composites with rare-earth element, and studies of their crystal structure, properties and applications. Also the research includes electronic structure calculations of solids, crystal structure of functional materials, phase transition and applications of materials science. The research group has over 20 scientists including one academician, 2 Sc.Ds, 6 Ph.Ds, 6 doctorands and 6 M.Sc graduates.
